Honeycomb: The World Beyond Base Building Guide
From Frozen Way’s devlogs and developer replies, the Kekbur interview with product owner Szymon Szymaniak-Gnaś at Gamescom 2026, and launch-week players.
How building works
Honeycomb uses “relatively large premade modules rather than asking you to assemble structures from hundreds of tiny individual pieces” (Kekbur). Alidove compares it to Subnautica rather than Grounded. The style mixes sci-fi with Art Nouveau: rounded rooms, flower-shaped solar panels and a Tesla-coil silo. Early on the Drone Builder builds for you; later the Drone Engineer lets you lay out a base in planning mode and a Drone Hive builds it.
Where to put it
- The Building Minion quest has you place a water pump, a wind turbine and a multi-purpose room next to the pod. Do it, because it unlocks the next blueprints.
- Then dismantle it all and rebuild. Alidove moved a short way north-west to a bare patch by the river; flat ground is rare and the pod site cannot expand.
- You need water access: a river or an underground deposit. The water pump feeds your grow pods.
- Animal pens are large. One player recommends heading west along the river to the open ground just before it branches into the delta.
Dismantling refunds everything. “You can’t move it directly, you do have to destroy it, but you do get a full material refund!” said the developer. The Gamescom 2026 interview repeats it: “dismantling returns 100% of the resources.”
Rooms, floors and bees
- Connect rooms from outside. A player who could not join a bee tub room to a second habitat solved it by building from outside, not inside.
- The bee pipe goes only in the centre of certain rooms and cannot overlap a staircase above or below. Plan whole floors for grow beds; Alidove suggests at least two multi-purpose rooms of them.
- Grow beds need light and the bee pipe. Automated grow beds harvest and store crops for you.
- Lab furniture: stations like the soldering station sit on tables you place, which the Scarlet Seeker liked because it makes the lab feel like yours.
- Mirror: placing one lets you change Hennessy’s hairstyle.
- Garage module: the only way to craft the hover buggy, and nothing in the quests mentions it.
Common problems
| Problem | What players found |
|---|---|
| ”Cannot place here” on corridor modules | No clear fix yet; a forum thread is open. Try from outside and on flatter ground. |
| Animal shelter says there is not enough room, with no reason given | The footprint is large and you cannot clear trees to make space. Pick open ground. |
| Base only expands upward | Reported by one player (two towers, three levels); unanswered on 10 Sep 2026. |
| Trash can does nothing | Bugged at launch per players; use a spare locker as a bin for now. |
| Weight still high after emptying pockets | Equipped tools count, and an inventory filter can hide items (developer reply). |
Storage
Lockers are limited by weight on the standard modes. Crafting stations can pull from nearby lockers, but only within a short radius, so keep a locker beside each station. Lockers can only be built indoors.
Later: outposts and automation
The Gamescom 2026 interview describes automated miners for underground deposits and relay antennas that move resources, power and water between bases and double as fast-travel points, making second bases practical.
