Build near a river or an underground water deposit. Frozen Way's walkthrough starts by building the base "that will serve both as our habitat and research facility", and the base guide covers where to put it.
Method 1: allogamy (flowers, crops and herbs)
- Collect two different flowers from the same family with the shears, so the flower is not damaged. It will decay, so process it into seeds in your inventory.
- Plant both seeds in one grow pod.
- Wait for them to grow. If the cross works, a new sprout appears in a free slot, often a different colour.
- Herbs die once fully mature, so for herbs the cross has to happen during the earlier flowering stage.
Frozen Way's 2022 devlog calls allogamy "the most basic form of experiment", the one that is "almost impossible to mess up". It only happens with plants that flower and are currently in bloom.
Method 2: grafting (trees)
- Grow a tree in the lab from seed.
- Cut the small twig off it, then attach a twig taken from another tree of the same family.
- If the branch is compatible, that branch grows mutated fruit. If not, the fruit stays the same and you start again.
- Break the mutated fruit into seeds and plant them to grow the new tree.
Alidove notes that only the fruit on the grafted branch is hybridised, so a tree that fruits in more than one place can give two kinds of fruit in one harvest. She calls grafting the step that took her longest to figure out.

That is every pairing Frozen Way has shown. We do not list recipes nobody has published: the game has far more hybrids (only 0.8% of players had made every plant hybrid by 10 September 2026), and we add them here as players document them.
Animal hybrids
Frozen Way describes this as manipulating "animal DNA to trigger fascinating physical changes". At Gamescom 2025 the product owner said different Camilla hybrids provide different materials. The first-animal-hybrid achievement (A new species…) was at 9.5% on 10 September 2026, above the first plant hybrid (6.6%), so most players reach an animal cross first. See the animals page.
Soil, fertilizer and speed
- Different soil and fertilizer change how many flowers, fruit and crops you harvest (crossbreeding devlog).
- Fertilizer needs biomass, which appears when plant parts rot to 0% (players also get it from un-planting seeds), plus strider horns and one more ingredient that no source has confirmed yet.
- Automated grow beds harvest and store for you, so nothing spoils before you get home.
- You can skip time, but every skip drains your stats, especially rest.
Crossbreeding FAQ
Do plants have to be from the same family?
Frozen Way's own walkthrough says two different plants from the same family. The YouTuber Alidove, a biologist, writes after 20 hours that the game is far more permissive than real genetics and that you should mix different types too. Try within a family first; if you experiment across families, note that the official rule is the stricter one.
What is the fastest way to get seeds for crossbreeding?
The plant darts from the Field Sedation quest line. Shooting a plant with one grows it instantly to any stage, so you can get flowers or seeds in seconds instead of waiting for its cycle.
Why is crossbreeding worth doing?
Hybrids have their own effects when eaten ("different, more potent or more beneficial effects", per Frozen Way), give new materials, and are needed for the late game: The Pass has hybrids that exist nowhere else.
