Names, zones and behaviour are quoted or paraphrased from Frozen Way's Sota7 Field Survey Logs on Steam unless the source column says otherwise. The logs say they cover 'only a selection' of each zone.

How befriending works

Scanning an animal with the Analyzer only gives you the basics. Frozen Way's product owner explained at Gamescom 2025 that a wildlife cam watches an animal for a while and then gives you a "recipe" for earning its trust: the food it likes, a ritual it does, a time of day. You then do it yourself. In ProRogueBear's launch video, a Camilla only lets you pet it after you copy it (it jumps, you jump), and each Camilla has to be won over individually.

There is more on this in the taming guide.

Hostile and territorial animals

Scorchweavers in the Valley undergrowth, nesting Gum Nibis and Bronze Wox packs in the Headlands are the ones that hit back. At Gamescom 2025 two protective animals took about half of Hennessy's health before backing off once she left the nest. Players on the forum also name "Chuls" as hostile animals near a fertilizer ingredient; Frozen Way has not described them yet. The answer is the tranquiliser dart, not a weapon: there is no killing in the game, and losing all your health knocks you out instead of killing you, except in Space Hell mode.

Animal hybrids

Animals can be crossbred too. At Gamescom 2025 Frozen Way said Camilla hybrids give different materials, such as wool that is both light and hard for tools. On 10 September 2026, 9.5% of Steam players had made a first animal hybrid (A new species…) and 0.5% had made every one (Xeno zoologist). The crossbreeding page covers the lab side.

Animals FAQ

How do you tame animals in Honeycomb: The World Beyond?

You befriend them rather than cage them. Point the wildlife cam at an animal to learn what it likes, then do it: copy a Camilla when it jumps, or put a strider snack on the ground and back away. Each animal earns its own trust; it does not carry over to the whole species.

Can you kill animals?

No. Frozen Way built the game around not killing anything. For hostile animals you carry a tranquiliser dart from the Field Sedation quest, which also lets you scan them safely.

What is the rarest animal achievement?

Xeno zoologist, for making every possible animal hybrid: 0.5% of Steam players had it on 10 September 2026. Animal Whisperer, for taming the Canul, was at 2.3%.
